Secondary Education

Marres offers various programs for secondary education at our location in Maastricht or at the school itself. Students learn to analyze their own observations with Marres’ educational offerings.

Classes are welcome to visit the exhibitions at Marres. Under the guidance of the education team, they investigate their own experience of art. Then they formulate questions about their own role within contemporary culture and bridge to other areas of interest. Marres also brings education projects to schools, such as Arts and Culture programs or a workshop observing with The Invisible Collection. In addition, Marres also provides CKV days for secondary schools.

In-depth Tour

A group visit to Marres focuses on the experience and perception of art. The exhibitions serve as a starting point for this. With interactive assignments, students are physically involved in the theme of the exhibition and challenged to form their own reaction and share it with classmates. The students are supported by Marres and professionals from various fields using a variety of methods, such as Visible Thinking Routines, SenseSquared, Sensory Mapping and Art Based Learning. With four different exhibitions each year, a visit to Marres is never the same and there is always something new to discover.

Arts and Culture Education

Together with schools, Marres develops Arts and Culture programs that connect to the disciplines of CKV (Education in Arts and Culture). Examples are discap-photography, in which students explore how to tell a story with images, or discap-imaging, in which young people analyze a self-chosen (art) object or plant from all their senses. In addition, Marres develops final exam programs combining philosophy and art subjects. Here, Marres deploys art professionals involved in Marres and the study of the senses. Because the exercises come not only from the art field, but also from the medical world, anthropology or business, the Arts and Culture program offers a starting point to collaborate with other disciplines.

Workshop The Invisible Collection

In the workshop The Invisible Collection, students are guided in the contemplative and associative recounting of their experiences in perceiving art. Thereby using all the senses: what do they feel when they see a work of art? Or what do they smell? These stories are then recorded and shared with each other. The Invisible Collection encourages students to reflect on their own perception and the perceptions of others. Thus, they explore the possibilities of experiencing a work of art through the spoken story of another. Teachers can create their own interpretation of themes such as identity, culture, society, language and history from the story archive.

Extended

Extended is the youth department of Marres and Jan van Eyck Academy, where participants work on a social art project for four months, providing a unique inside look at an art institution. In a team, young people explore what kind of sensory knowledge comes from experiencing contemporary culture. They devise activities and engage in experimentation to find new ways of perceiving culture: can you make people hear, feel, smell, see or taste something to make them think?
