Marres, House for Contemporary Culture, is looking for freelance construction team members (M/F/X) – self-employed / project-based

Marres, House for Contemporary Culture is an international platform for contemporary art in the heart of Maastricht. To realize our exhibitions, we work with a flexible and creative construction team.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for self-employed, practically minded professionals with experience in construction and installation work who can support our construction team on a project basis, preferably with experience working in a cultural or project-based environment.

You will work closely with artists and the production manager to realize exhibitions and build (art) installations. The work can vary greatly: one day you might be working on an installation involving heavy beams and concrete (the rougher work), while at another moment you may need the patience and precision to support an artist in carrying out delicate and complex work. For this reason, we are looking for people who are flexible and able to easily switch between different types of tasks.

Responsibilities

As a member of the construction team, you will work together with artists and colleagues on the installation and setup of exhibitions. Your tasks include, among others:

  • Building structures from wood and other construction materials
  • Setting up and installing audiovisual technical equipment
  • Painting work
  • Art handling and transport

Who are you?

We are looking for someone who is reliable, hardworking, and has strong focus and professional expertise. You will work in a varied and creative environment and contribute to exhibitions and projects with international artists and partners.

  • You have experience with construction and general handyman work
  • You have knowledge of audiovisual technology and its installation
  • You work accurately and think in solutions
  • You can work both independently and as part of a team
  • You are flexibly available during exhibition installation and deinstallation periods
  • You have an affinity with contemporary art and culture
  • You handle fragile materials and artworks with care
  • You hold a valid driver’s license (Category B)
  • Experience with art handling, exhibition building, and/or working in a cultural institution is a plus

What we offer:

As a self-employed contractor in our construction team, you will have the opportunity to apply and further develop your creativity and technical skills. We offer flexible, project-based assignments, a competitive fee, and an extensive fresh lunch during installation and deinstallation days.
