Correspondence for Choir (2019-ongoing) began during Marjet Zwaans’ residency at the Jan van Eyck Academy, together with musicians from the neighbouring Maastricht Conservatory. By looking around rather than forward. By listening to their surrounding and responding to one another, without synchronising, but mutually dependent.
On 22 October 2022, Correspondence for Choir opens their rehearsal, the most playful and experimental part of the process. Singing makes you feel a certain way. It cultivates inner calm and incredible strength. In a choir makes you feel connected to a bigger whole. We suggest experimenting with complementing voices as an ecological approach.
For the continuation of Correspondence for Choir, composer Sachit Ajmani, conductor Ines Texeira, and artist Marjet Zwaans, devised a sequel to the earlier rehearsals. The first composition emerged from a mutual interaction, such as the formation of lichen. The score was open to interpretation and improvisation and so rehearsals constantly evolved. During the upcoming rehearsal, we practice and encourage to support each other’s voices. In search to complement and build a complex vocal cluster.

De Ommuurde Tuin
The garden of Marres has a rich history and offers space to large fig trees, flowering shrubs such as hawthorn and winter jasmine, ferns and flowers such as tulips and dahlias. The garden is also populated by a large number of birds, insects, butterflies, toads and frogs. At the very back is a monumental ice house where ice used to be stored in the hot summer months. With all the beauty that the garden of Marres has to offer, artist Gladys Zeevaarders has put together a publication. She asked 10 artists to connect their own practice with the walled garden. The result: a beautiful publication with commissions from 10 different artists. This can be ordered in our webshop or for sale in our museum shop.
