Sander Breure & Witte van Hulzen: On Gestures Of Doing Nothing
On Gestures of Doing Nothing documents a performance staged by Sander Breure & Witte van Hulzen. The performance took place on April 15 and 16, 2019, in their exhibition The Floor is Lava in Marres. It consisted of eleven performers presenting a series of gestures. The performance – along with the exhibition itself – was photographed by Petra Stavast. This publication was conceived and developed in collaboration with art historian and curator Arnisa Zeqo.
Through the years, Breure & Van Hulzen collected various types of everyday gestures. This performative publication brings together a selection of ‘gestures of doing nothing’. It is based on a script for eleven performers who are standing, leaning, hanging, smoking, gazing, fumbling with a cell phone. ‘Hanging around’ is something you do with people you feel familiar with. Therefore the performers are people with whom the artists have worked before, family, and friends. Each actor was bound to a specific room and photographed in that setting.
